PM Browne Renews Call for OECS Airline as He Blames Limited Aircraft for Regional Flight Chaos

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has renewed his call for the establishment of an OECS airline, arguing that a shortage of aircraft among existing regional carriers is a major factor behind persistent flight delays and cancellations across the Caribbean.

Browne said airlines serving the region simply do not have enough aircraft and backup capacity to consistently maintain their schedules when problems arise.

“The pervasive flight delays and cancellations among the airlines operating in the region are due primarily to a lack of adequate assets,” Browne said.

The Prime Minister believes the situation strengthens the case for a well-capitalised OECS carrier, supported by regional governments but operated under private management.

His comments come as travellers continue to express frustration over disruptions to regional air travel. Passengers relying on LIAT Air, interCaribbean Airways, Winair, Sunrise Airways and Caribbean Airlines have faced cancellations, lengthy delays and missed connections, with limited alternatives on some routes.

The problem is particularly challenging in the Eastern Caribbean, where several airlines operate relatively small fleets. When an aircraft develops a technical problem or is taken out of service, the disruption can quickly affect several flights and destinations.

For islands with limited airlift, passengers may also have few options to reach their destination when a scheduled service is cancelled.

Browne has argued that an OECS airline with a larger fleet and adequate backup aircraft could provide greater reliability while improving connectivity between the sub-region’s islands.

He also sees dependable regional air transportation as important to tourism, trade and the wider movement of people throughout the Caribbean.

For many travellers, however, the concern is more immediate. Regional flights are used not only for vacations, but also for business, medical appointments, education and family commitments.

With repeated disruptions continuing to affect passengers, Browne maintains that the region needs a more sustainable aviation model capable of providing the reliable connectivity Caribbean people depend on.
