Fire Service Legislation to Be Modernised After Decades

The Government is moving to replace decades-old legislation governing Antigua and Barbuda’s fire service and formally recognise its expanded role as a modern fire and rescue organisation.

The Fire and Rescue Service Bill, 2026, is expected to go before the House of Representatives when Parliament convenes on September 18.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin advised Cabinet that the Bill will modernise the existing legislative framework and reflect the broader responsibilities now carried out by fire and rescue personnel.

The proposed law is one of six major bills forming part of the Government’s public-safety and justice agenda.

Parliament is also expected to consider legislation addressing policing, forensic services, firearm offences, magistrates’ procedures and mental-health care.

Cabinet said the reforms are intended to ensure that the country’s emergency, law-enforcement and justice institutions operate under modern laws suited to their present responsibilities.
