Police Concerned as Murder and Shooting Accused Secure Bail

Senior police officials have raised concerns about people accused of murder, shootings and other violent offences being released on bail while their cases remain before the courts.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Lisborn Michael said the situation has frustrated victims’ families and, in some cases, left police officers discouraged after carrying out lengthy investigations.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show, Michael recalled receiving a telephone call from a mother whose son was murdered in 2024.

Michael initially believed the accused man remained in prison. However, after the mother reported seeing him in public, the Assistant Commissioner made inquiries and confirmed that the accused had been granted bail.

He also referred to defendants charged in connection with a shooting in the West Bus Station area who were reportedly released on bail.

According to Michael, one of the defendants subsequently appeared before the same judge in another matter and was convicted of robbery.

The Assistant Commissioner said the examples demonstrate why police are concerned about repeat offenders and defendants accused of serious crimes returning to the streets.

Police continue to investigate, arrest and charge suspects, he said, but the force has no authority over decisions made after accused people are brought before the courts.

Michael acknowledged that bail is a judicial decision and that accused people are presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, he suggested that public safety and the seriousness of the allegations should receive careful consideration.

The officer said police have repeatedly encountered people suspected of committing additional crimes while on bail or shortly after completing sentences for earlier offences.

He also expressed concern about the effect on victims’ relatives, who may unexpectedly encounter people accused of killing or seriously injuring their loved ones.

Michael said police would continue doing their part by investigating offences and placing evidence before the courts.

However, he maintained that every part of the criminal justice system must function effectively if the authorities are to reduce violent crime and prevent repeat offending.
