Commonwealth Heads of Government will swap the conference room for the cricket pitch during CHOGM 2026 in Antigua and Barbuda, joining emerging young players for a landmark exhibition series at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
The “One Commonwealth, One Team” Exhibition Cricket Match Series will feature a friendly T5 contest between Commonwealth leaders and a separate Under-23 T10 match showcasing some of the Commonwealth’s rising cricket talent.
The matches will be staged following Antigua and Barbuda’s Independence Day celebrations and form part of the activities surrounding the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, scheduled for November 1 to 4.
In the T5 match, Caribbean leaders will face their counterparts from the wider Commonwealth, offering an unusual and entertaining display of diplomacy through sport.
The Commonwealth Future Stars Under-23 T10 Match will then place young players in the international spotlight, providing an opportunity to celebrate emerging talent and connect the next generation with Commonwealth leaders.
The series is inspired by the legacy of Antiguan cricket icon, national hero and CHOGM 2026 Envoy Sir Vivian Richards. Organisers said it would use cricket to promote partnership, friendship, leadership, inclusion and a shared sense of purpose across the Commonwealth.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration and Chair of the CHOGM Task Force, E.P. Chet Greene, said cricket is deeply connected to Antigua and Barbuda’s heritage and identity.
“Bringing leaders together alongside young people through cricket celebrates our common bonds while looking to the future,” Greene said.
“We want CHOGM 2026 to create lasting connections and opportunities for our people, and ‘One Commonwealth, One Team’ is a powerful expression of that ambition.”
Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey described cricket as one of the traditions that connects Commonwealth countries and communities.
She said staging the series in Antigua and Barbuda, under the inspiration of Sir Vivian, would demonstrate the strength created when Commonwealth countries combine their different talents and pursue common goals.
Sir Vivian said cricket has always been more than a game for Commonwealth nations.
“It is a shared language that brings people together across nations and generations,” he said.
“I am delighted that, as we welcome the Commonwealth to Antigua and Barbuda, cricket will help bring the spirit of CHOGM 2026 to life, celebrating friendship and teamwork and creating opportunities to work together as one team.”
The initiative is supported by the Sustainable Markets Initiative, which was founded by King Charles III in 2020, in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat, Commonwealth Sport, the West Indies Cricket Association and the Khalili Foundation.
Organisers said the series would also serve as a platform for advancing discussions and partnerships related to sustainability, inclusive growth and economic opportunity.
Sustainable Markets Initiative Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Jordan-Saifi said sport’s global reach gives it the ability to unite governments, businesses and communities behind common objectives.
“Cricket is woven into the fabric of the Commonwealth, making it a powerful platform to demonstrate what partnership can achieve,” she said.
The cricket series will be staged alongside the inaugural Commonwealth Sport Summit during CHOGM week. The summit will bring together senior representatives from government, sport and business to examine how sport can contribute to sustainable development, economic prosperity and Commonwealth unity.
Commonwealth Sport President Dr Donald Rukare said organisers want sport’s contribution to extend well beyond competition by building partnerships and encouraging practical action on shared challenges.
CHOGM 2026 will be held in St John’s under the theme, “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”
