Democrats have won control of the US House of Representatives and Senate, delivering a major defeat to President Donald Trump’s Republicans in the midterm elections.

The party secured Senate victories in Republican strongholds including Texas, Ohio and Kansas, where voters elected their first Democratic senator in nearly a century. Frustration over rising living costs and the Iran war helped drive the Democratic gains.

Trump accepted the outcome and acknowledged that the war had contributed to Republican losses.

The new Democratic majorities will take office in January, giving the party greater power to investigate his administration and challenge his legislative agenda during his final two years in office.
