Brazil has appointed Marcia Abreu as its new Non-Resident Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, reaffirming the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

Ambassador Abreu, who will be based at the Brazilian Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados, formally presented her credentials to Governor General’s Deputy Sir Clare Roberts during a ceremony at Government House this week.

Welcoming the ambassador, Sir Clare reflected on the relationship between Antigua and Barbuda and Brazil, which dates back to February 1982—just months after the twin-island nation attained independence.

“Over the years, our countries have developed a relationship founded on mutual respect, friendship and cooperation,” Sir Clare said.

He praised Brazil’s commitment to South-South cooperation and acknowledged its assistance to Antigua and Barbuda in agriculture, defence, healthcare, diplomatic training, food security and other areas of national development.

Sir Clare also recalled that Brazil opened an embassy in St John’s in 2009. Although the mission has since closed, he said diplomatic relations between the two countries remain strong.

Antigua and Barbuda and Brazil also continue to engage through regional and hemispheric organisations, including the Organization of American States and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

Sir Clare highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s participation in the Brazil-Caribbean Summit, held in Brasília on June 13, 2025, describing it as an important opportunity to strengthen dialogue and identify new areas of cooperation between Brazil and the Caribbean.

Ambassador Abreu succeeds Ambassador Vera Lucia dos Santos Caminha Campetti, who has completed her regional assignment and returned to Brazil for redeployment.
