Multi Agency Traffic Plan Being Developed As Vehicle Numbers Surge

The Government is developing a comprehensive traffic-management plan as Antigua and Barbuda grapples with congestion linked to an estimated 50,000 vehicles.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said discussions were already taking place on possible one-way systems, two-lane routes and larger roundabouts at key intersections.

A listener proposed converting the All Saints Road-American Road junction into a large two-lane roundabout and reviewing how other roads are used during the morning rush hour.

“Absolutely,” Browne responded. “Those discussions are taking place.”

He said the exercise would require cooperation among the Ministry of Public Works, the Development Control Authority, the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation and the police. Outside technical expertise may also be needed.

The Police Traffic Department has already developed recommendations, according to Browne.

“It has to be a multidisciplinary approach,” he said. “We have to put a comprehensive plan together.”

The prime minister also acknowledged complaints about roadside vendors and vehicles contributing to congestion near major routes, saying traffic flow and urban planning require coordinated enforcement and design.
