Former Athlete Sentenced to Eight Years for Sexually Abusing Daughter

A former athlete has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing his young daughter on multiple occasions.

The man, whose name cannot be published to protect the identity of the child, was sentenced after a High Court trial that ended in July with convictions on two counts of serious indecency.

Justice Ann Marie Smith imposed an eight-year sentence on each count, with the terms to run concurrently. The man was acquitted on a third charge.

The convictions arose from separate incidents between 2022 and 2023. An all-female jury found him guilty of digitally penetrating the child and, on another occasion, placing his genitals against her rear.

During the trial, the child told the court that the abuse took place while she was living with her father and usually happened when his girlfriend was not at home.

She testified that her father would invite her into his bed, tell her to remove her clothing and then subject her to the acts.

The child also told the court that she later resisted attempts by her father to have her live with him again because she was afraid the abuse would happen again.

During cross-examination, defence attorney Wendel Alexander questioned the child about whether she had been coached by her grandmother or anyone else to make the allegations.

She rejected those suggestions and maintained that her evidence was truthful.

The child’s grandmother also testified during the proceedings, describing incidents that raised concerns about the child’s relationship with her father.

She told the court that on one occasion the child became distressed and hid in a closet rather than leave with her father. On another occasion, the grandmother said, the child and her father returned shortly after leaving because the child would not stop crying.

The grandmother denied suggestions from the defence that the allegations had been fabricated or that the child had been neglected while in her care.

The former athlete will now serve eight years in prison for the offences for which he was convicted.
