Browne Meets Multibillionaire Philanthropist Alex Soros to Discuss Antigua and Barbuda’s Development Priorities

Prime Minister Gaston Browne met with Open Society Foundations chairman Alex Soros and president Binaifer Nowrojee on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York to discuss areas of potential cooperation with Antigua and Barbuda.

Alexander Soros born October 27, 1985is an American investor and philanthropist. One of the five children of billionaire George Sores.

The talks covered renewable energy, electric mobility and sustainable transportation, as well as wider development priorities. Browne also raised opportunities for engagement across the Caribbean and Africa on trade, regional integration, reparatory justice and economic inequality.

According to the account of the meeting, Open Society Foundations expressed a willingness to support priorities Browne intends to pursue during his two-year term as Commonwealth Chair-in-Office.

Those priorities include strengthening multilateral cooperation, expanding economic opportunities for vulnerable countries, and advancing women’s rights and youth empowerment. No funding agreement or specific project was announced.

Nowrojee is expected to visit Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and deliver a keynote address at the Women’s Forum. Browne also invited Soros to attend, pointing to opportunities he expects to arise from the CHOGM Business Forum.

Open Society Foundations was founded by financier and philanthropist George Soros, Alex Soros’s father.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Walton Webson, and Second Secretary Dr. Jerri-Anne Jeremy joined Browne at the meeting.
