Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority Begins Rehabilitation of St. John’s Waterfront Boardwalk
Phased rehabilitation will replace ageing piles and decking to improve safety and pedestrian access between Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay.
The Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority, under the leadership of its manager Dr. Darwin Telemaque, has commenced a major rehabilitation of the waterfront boardwalk connecting Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay.
The project will replace ageing wooden piles and worn decking with durable concrete piles and water-sealed, pressure-treated pine decking. These improvements will reduce frequent maintenance requirements and provide a safer, stronger and longer-lasting walkway for residents and visitors.
Demolition is already underway, with reconstruction scheduled to begin later this week. To minimise disruption, the work will be undertaken in four phases, beginning with the main section connecting Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay.
The second phase will cover the section beside the Heritage Quay police outpost, followed by the area between Exotic Antigua and the Boardwalk Casino. The project will conclude with the final stretch from the Boardwalk Casino to Lower Nevis Street.
Barring unforeseen delays, the entire project is expected to be completed ahead of the 2026/27 cruise tourism season.
Once completed, the restored boardwalk will improve pedestrian access along the waterfront and enhance the downtown shopping and tourism district for residents, businesses and arriving cruise passengers.
The rehabilitation reflects the Port Authority’s continued commitment to improving national infrastructure and maintaining a safe and attractive waterfront.
The Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority thanks the public for its patience during the works and looks forward to welcoming residents and visitors to the restored boardwalk.
