Chief Magistrate Visits Prison, Leads Workshop on Treatment of Inmates
Ngaio Emanuel meets new Prison Superintendent Albert Wade and leads a workshop on prisoner treatment, use of force, ethics and remand deductions.
Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel visited His Majesty’s Prison this morning to meet with newly appointed Prison Superintendent Albert Wade and conduct a workshop on prisoner treatment and professional standards.
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss concerns Wade may have as he takes up leadership of the institution.
The workshop addressed the treatment of prisoners, including the use of force, as well as ethics in the performance of duties.
It also examined provisions of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court Sentencing Guidelines concerning deductions for time spent on remand. Discussions focused on circumstances in which the guidelines allow a judicial officer to deduct that time from a sentence.
Wade returns to the position following the retirement of Lieutenant Colonel Trevor Pennyfeather. He previously served as Prison Superintendent from 2014 to 2019 and brings more than four decades of experience in the security forces to the role.
