VIDEO: Lockdown Drill at Jennings Secondary Sparks Concern and Confusion

Principal Rody Christopher says the exercise was intended to prepare students for an intruder emergency after confusion surrounding the drill triggered concern.

What was intended to prepare students for a potentially dangerous emergency instead triggered fear and confusion after video from a lockdown drill at Jennings Secondary School began circulating without a clear explanation of what was taking place.

The footage shows scenes from an exercise designed to simulate an intruder entering the school compound, with students seen moving along walkways and stairs as the drill unfolded.

But with some parents reportedly unaware that an exercise was being conducted, the video quickly became a source of concern.

Principal Rody Christopher subsequently issued a notice to parents and guardians explaining that the activity was a lockdown drill aimed at preparing students for an intruder emergency.

“The school conducted a Lockdown Drill to make students aware of how to stay safe in case intruders came on the school’s campus,” Christopher said.

He acknowledged that the exercise had not been understood by everyone.

“Unfortunately, some persons misunderstood and some confusion was caused. Please be assured that all is well and we have the best interest of your child/ward in mind,” the principal wrote.

The notice sought to reassure concerned parents following the circulation of the video and make clear that the scenes were part of the school’s emergency preparedness exercise.

The incident, however, has highlighted the importance of clear communication surrounding drills of this nature, particularly when footage can quickly circulate beyond the school without context.

For parents receiving such images unexpectedly, the distinction between a simulation and a genuine emergency may not immediately be clear.

Christopher maintained that the exercise was conducted with students’ safety in mind and reassured families that all was well at the school.
