Director of Education Calls for Practical Support for Teachers on World Teachers’ Day
Ministry highlights fair pay, manageable workloads and teacher wellbeing in its message honouring Antigua and Barbuda’s educators.
Antigua and Barbuda’s Director of Education is calling for appreciation of teachers to be backed by practical support, including fair remuneration, manageable workloads and safe, adequately resourced classrooms.
In a message marking World Teachers’ Day on October 5, 2026, issued on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Director paid tribute to educators across public and private institutions, from early childhood to higher education.
The message acknowledged teachers’ lasting influence on students, noting that their work extends beyond classroom lessons to building confidence, encouraging better choices and helping young people discover their abilities.
“Much of your finest work escapes public notice, but its value is written into the lives you touch,” the Director said.
The message highlighted this year’s theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” linking it to the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
The Director said the occasion should prompt reflection on how Antigua and Barbuda demonstrates meaningful support for those entrusted with educating its children.
Teaching is becoming increasingly demanding, the message noted, with digital technologies and artificial intelligence requiring careful judgement, diverse learning needs calling for inclusive approaches, and concerns about student wellbeing placing additional demands on educators.
“As you care for your students, your own wellbeing must receive serious attention,” the Director stated.
Alongside fair pay and improved working conditions, the message identified professional development, respect for teachers’ judgement and their participation in decisions affecting their work as priorities.
The Ministry reaffirmed its responsibility to listen to educators, engage constructively with them and their representatives, and pursue practical improvements informed by their classroom experience.
Parents, guardians, communities and national partners were also urged to strengthen their relationships with schools and share responsibility for children’s development.
The Director encouraged teachers to continue learning, collaborating and innovating, while allowing compassion, fairness and integrity to guide their work.
The message concluded with thanks for educators’ patience, perseverance and belief in the potential of Antigua and Barbuda’s children.
