Antigua and Barbuda Health Delegation Completes NCD Training in China
Four-member team explores disease prevention, health surveillance and artificial intelligence during a two-week workshop in Beijing.
A four-member delegation from Antigua and Barbuda has completed a two-week training programme in China focused on strengthening the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.
The workshop, held in Beijing from September 10–23, was sponsored by China’s Ministry of Commerce and organised by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The delegation comprised Chief Nutrition Officer Samantha Moitt of the Ministry of Health; Dr. Akweta Alexander of the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre; Caryl Michael, Matron at Hannah Thomas Hospital; and Patrice Defoe, Senior Clerk at the Medical Benefits Scheme.
Through lectures, hospital and health-centre visits, study tours and visits to health demonstration areas, participants examined China’s strategies for addressing cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes and major risk factors.
A central focus was the Healthy China 2030 Initiative, particularly its use of surveillance data to identify health priorities, guide interventions and measure progress.
Participants also explored how artificial intelligence can support outpatient services, monitor vital signs and provide reminders about medication and healthy lifestyle practices.
For the Antigua and Barbuda delegation, the training highlighted the importance of long-term planning, reliable surveillance systems and the effective use of data in shaping healthcare priorities.
The delegation acknowledged differences between the two countries in population, resources and economic circumstances, while noting the value of clear plans, consistent implementation and regular assessments of progress.
The knowledge gained is expected to support Antigua and Barbuda’s ongoing efforts to improve NCD prevention and management, strengthen health promotion and surveillance, and expand the use of technology in healthcare.
