Browne Says ABLP Is Debt-Free and Holds Financial Reserves
Prime Minister cites party finances while defending temporary accommodation for university law students.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party has cleared its debts and holds financial reserves.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show, Browne said the party had a cash surplus and investments in government bonds.
He made the comments while rejecting suggestions that temporary accommodation for UWI Five Islands law students was designed to earn money for the party.
Browne said the party’s involvement was intended to support students until the university could make space available for the programme.
He described the absence of debt as a first in the party’s history and argued that its financial position undermined claims that the arrangement was motivated by a need for revenue.
No financial statements or details of the value of the party’s reserves were presented during that portion of the programme.
