High Street to Lead Major St. John's Transformation as Cabinet Appoints Three Ministers to Oversee Redevelopment

High Street has been identified as the starting point for an ambitious redevelopment of St. John's, as the government moves to address longstanding infrastructure challenges and restore the capital's appeal as a centre of business, culture and national activity.
Cabinet announced on Wednesday that a three-member ministerial team has been established to coordinate the redevelopment programme.
The team comprises Minister of Utilities Melford Nicholas, Minister of Social and Urban Transformation Rawdon Turner and Minister of Works Maria Browne.
Their responsibilities will include coordinating the activities of government ministries, statutory bodies and utility providers involved in the proposed transformation.
According to the Cabinet report, the first phase will focus heavily on High Street before the programme expands to other areas of the capital.
The initiative is expected to include improvements to roads, drainage systems, sidewalks, public spaces, utility infrastructure and the general appearance of buildings.
Cabinet also highlighted the importance of coordinating underground utility works before major road reconstruction begins.
Earlier plans called for the Ministry of Works to collaborate with the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) to replace ageing water infrastructure ahead of roadworks, reducing the possibility of newly reconstructed roads being excavated to accommodate utility repairs.
The redevelopment programme follows public consultations held earlier this year, which attracted participation from government agencies, businesses, residents and other stakeholders.
Those discussions examined the future of St. John's and the improvements needed to make the capital more attractive, functional and economically vibrant.
Cabinet maintains that the initiative must deliver lasting improvements for residents, businesses and visitors.
The three Ministers will now oversee coordination among the agencies responsible for implementing the programme, although the Cabinet report did not provide a specific commencement date for construction along High Street.
