Horse owners in the Bendals and Jennings areas are appealing for public assistance following recurring thefts, including the disappearance of a mare and her three-month-old foal from Bendals between Sunday night and early Monday morning.

The latest incident has heightened concern among owners, particularly because of the foal’s young age and dependence on its mother.

According to information shared in the appeal, the same mare was stolen two years ago but was subsequently found and returned. This time, owners fear for the welfare of both animals and are especially concerned about the possibility of them being separated.

Those making the appeal said the foal still relies on its mother for milk and protection, warning that separation could put its survival at risk.

The disappearance follows another reported theft last month, when two horses belonging to an owner in Ebenezer were taken. One has since been recovered and returned, while the other remains missing.

Members of the public are being asked to report any unusual activity involving horses, including sightings of a young foal without its mother.

“We hope the public may offer any leads,” the appeal stated, urging residents to consider whether they had seen anything that could help locate the animals.

In response to the thefts, another horse owner has initiated a proposal for an independent nationwide database to help owners identify and locate stolen horses more easily.

The proposed register would include photographs showing each animal’s distinguishing marks, along with details such as size and colour. Owners hope the initiative will bring the community together and improve the sharing of information when animals go missing.

Horse owners across Antigua and Barbuda are being encouraged to participate.

Anyone with information about the missing animals can call 720-2438 or send a WhatsApp message or voice note to 774-1496. Owners wishing to register for the proposed database can also contact 720-2438.
