The voice that helped define Caribbean calypso for generations will receive a fitting national farewell as Trinidad and Tobago prepares to honour the late Mighty Sparrow with three days of public tributes, cultural performances and ceremonial observances.
The legendary entertainer, born Slinger Francisco and celebrated internationally as the Calypso King of the World, will be honoured with a State-Assisted Funeral and Celebration of Life on October 16, following two opportunities for members of the public to pay their final respects.
The Ministry of Culture and Community Development announced Friday that public viewing will take place on October 13 at the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA) and October 14 at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), both from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Government is working alongside the Francisco family to organise the farewell, which will celebrate Sparrow's extraordinary contribution to Trinidad and Tobago's cultural identity, the development of Caribbean music and his lasting international influence.
Sparrow's remains were returned to Trinidad and Tobago from New York on October 6. His son, Cyril Sancho Francisco, accompanied by Culture and Community Development Minister Michelle Benjamin and ministry officials, received him at Piarco International Airport.
In accordance with the family's wishes, the ministry has requested that members of the public refrain from taking photographs or recording videos during the viewing sessions.
The official Celebration of Life on October 16 will begin at 10 a.m. with a procession from Independence Square in Port of Spain, travelling along Frederick Street before concluding at NAPA.
The procession will unfold in three stages, beginning with a National Farewell at Independence Square, followed by a People's and Cultural Farewell along Frederick Street and a Ceremonial Farewell at NAPA.
Members of the public, school representatives and participants from the Carnival and cultural industries are expected to join the procession, which will also feature selected recordings from Sparrow's extensive musical catalogue.
A special tribute programme will follow at NAPA from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., featuring steel orchestras, Moko Jumbies, traditional masquerade performers and other cultural presentations celebrating his life and legacy.
Arrangements are also being made to accommodate members of the public wishing to view the Celebration of Life at the Grand Stand, Queen's Park Savannah. Further details are expected to be announced.
Meanwhile, the public has until October 15 to sign the condolence book titled One Last Note…for the King of Calypso.
The book is available at several locations, including the Ministry of Culture and Community Development's offices at the International Waterfront Complex, NAPA, SAPA, the Shaw Park Complex in Tobago, all 14 municipal corporation head offices and Trinidad and Tobago's diplomatic missions in New York, Miami, London, Washington and Toronto.
A virtual condolence book is also available through the ministry's website at mccd.gov.tt.
Minister Benjamin has continued discussions with the Francisco family and the organising committee to finalise ceremonial arrangements, transportation, security and public participation.
Planning meetings were held at NAPA on October 2, 7 and 8, followed by additional security discussions on Friday involving government officials and relevant agencies.
The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Sparrow receives a dignified farewell befitting his status as one of Trinidad and Tobago's most influential cultural figures.
The October 16 celebration is expected to bring together generations of admirers in a final tribute to an entertainer whose music and cultural influence extended far beyond the shores of Trinidad and Tobago.
