Five Islands Valedictorian Says Adaptability and Service Must Guide Graduates
UWI Five Islands valedictorian Kathalia Valentine urges graduates to embrace change, support others and lead with integrity.
UWI Five Islands valedictorian kathalia Valentine has urged the graduating class of 2026 to embrace change and use their education to serve others, describing adaptability as central to their future success.
Valentine, who graduated with first-class honours in Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship, delivered the valedictory address during the morning ceremony.
“Readiness is not about certainty, it is about adaptability,” she told graduates.
Reflecting on her own experience, Valentine said she initially believed her formal education was complete after graduating from Antigua State College in 2019.
A decision to consider another challenge eventually led her back into education, with university applications and acceptance letters in 2023 marking the start of a new chapter.
“What once felt like an ending became a new beginning,” she said.
Valentine identified five principles to guide graduates: anticipate change, discover opportunities, advocate for others, perform with integrity and take the lead.
She said the university experience had taught students lessons that extended beyond their academic subjects, including how to work together, seek help and speak on behalf of their peers.
“The University of the West Indies offers more than degrees — it cultivates leaders,” she said.
Reflecting on group assignments, she acknowledged that collaboration could initially cause anxiety, but said students learned to recognise the value of shared effort.
“Asking for help is not weakness but strength,” she said.
Valentine also paid tribute to lecturers who encouraged students to think clearly, express themselves precisely and learn from one another.
She linked those lessons to the growing use of artificial intelligence, emphasising the importance of responsible engagement with technology.
Thanking God, lecturers, university staff, classmates, relatives and employers, she acknowledged the support that helped graduates complete their studies.
“You invested in our future and we carry that investment forward,” she said.
Her closing message urged graduates to make service and values central to their ambitions.
“Advocate for others because leadership is service,” she said, adding that “success without values is empty.”
