A newly renovated Autopsy Suite and Morgue opened in Antigua and Barbuda on Monday, addressing longstanding concerns about staff working conditions and providing a more appropriate environment for families viewing their deceased loved ones.

Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, Michael Joseph, officially opened the facility at the junction of Factory Road and Nugent Avenue on October 12.

The renovation follows years of concerns about conditions at the former facility associated with Holberton Hospital. It provides improved spaces for post-mortem examinations, death investigations and the dignified handling of deceased persons.

Speaking at the ceremony, Joseph described the project as a long-awaited undertaking that responds to a practical need within the healthcare system.

He acknowledged the years of service provided by the former building but said changing needs and public expectations had made improvements necessary. He also recognised staff concerns about the environment in which they had been required to work.

The renovated facility includes an autopsy room, morgue, offices, a conference room and storage facilities. A designated waiting area has also been provided for families who attend to view their loved ones.

Permanent Secretary Stacey Gregg-Paige emphasised the importance of compassion and sensitivity in a service that brings staff into contact with people experiencing grief.

She said the improved environment must be accompanied by professionalism, accountability and respect for those who depend on the facility.

Joseph also urged staff and management to make maintenance a priority, stressing that preserving the building would be essential to protecting the investment and ensuring it continues to serve the country.

He recognised the contributions of planning and coordination teams, technical personnel, contractors, ministry officials and workers involved in completing the project. He also acknowledged the staff who continued carrying out their duties while awaiting better conditions.

Officials attending the opening included Chief Medical Officer Dr Kamaria DeCastro, Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre Director Shivon Belle-Jarvis, Consultant Pathologist Dr Sekeena Goodwin and Dr Lester Simon, along with senior officers from the ministry, medical centre and laboratory services.

The opening forms part of the government’s efforts to improve public healthcare infrastructure and the resources available to professionals delivering essential services.
