Antiguan Diplomat Claxton Duberry Chairs UN Security and Disarmament Session
The First Secretary at Antigua and Barbuda’s UN mission highlights the role of small states in shaping responses to global security challenges.
Antiguan and Barbudan diplomat Claxton Duberry has chaired deliberations of the United Nations First Committee, placing the country in a leading role during discussions on disarmament and international security.
Duberry, First Secretary at Antigua and Barbuda’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, presided over a meeting of the committee, whose mandate includes the regulation of armaments and international cooperation in maintaining peace and security.
According to a release from the Permanent Mission dated October 13, Duberry was also elected to serve on behalf of Antigua and Barbuda as Vice President of the committee for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Duberry described the occasion as an affirmation of the country’s participation in international diplomacy and stressed that small states have a role in developing solutions to global challenges.
“This was an important moment for Antigua and Barbuda as it affirms the importance of our participation in the multilateral system. Small states must continue to play a role in shaping discussions and advancing solutions to the prevailing challenges facing the international community today,” he said.
The Permanent Mission said participation at this level gives Antigua and Barbuda, a small island developing state, an opportunity to contribute directly to deliberations with far-reaching implications for international security and cooperation.
It added that the country remains committed to engaging in international forums where practical responses to global security concerns can be discussed.
