VIDEO: Victory Centre Pleads for Public Help as Thieves Target Special Needs School Again

Just hours after celebrating the handover of a hydroponics project, Victory Centre was dealt another setback when an individual was captured on camera uprooting lettuce grown by students.

What should have been a proud moment of achievement for students at Victory Centre School for Children with Special Needs has turned into heartbreak, after an individual allegedly entered the school’s premises and uprooted lettuce from a newly handed-over hydroponics project.

The incident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, just one day after the school celebrated the handover of the project on Tuesday.

According to the institution, security cameras captured an individual, believed to be connected to previous incidents at the school, pulling out lettuce that students had carefully nurtured but had not yet harvested.

The latest incident has prompted an urgent public appeal from the school, which says it has endured repeated break-ins, attempted robberies and thefts despite significant investments in security.

Last year, thieves stole essential equipment, including an air conditioner and microwave. Through donations and school savings, the items were replaced, only to be stolen again approximately one week later.

With assistance from parents, fundraisers, businesses and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, the institution subsequently installed security cameras and burglar bars.

However, the incidents have continued.

The school explained that the hydroponics project was particularly meaningful because it allowed students to develop practical skills, build confidence and gain independence.

Students had also been looking forward to harvesting their produce and using the proceeds to participate in social activities.

“To others, these items or crops may seem insignificant. To our students, they represent practical skills, confidence, independence, joy, and hope,” the school stated.

Expressing frustration over the repeated incidents, the institution issued a direct plea to those responsible.

“To the person or persons responsible: PLEASE STOP AND LEAVE OUR SCHOOL ALONE!”
Victory Centre is now calling on members of the public to assist police in identifying individuals allegedly captured in security footage attempting to gain access to the premises.

Anyone who recognises the individuals or has information that could assist investigators is being urged to contact the nearest police station. The public is also advised not to confront anyone.

The school has expressed appreciation to those who have continued supporting its operations through donations, fundraising and other contributions.

“Our students deserve better. Our school deserves better. Please help us protect their future,” the institution pleaded.
