Water shortages, ageing infrastructure and the growing threat of climate change have placed the Caribbean’s water security under increasing pressure, prompting regional leaders to unite behind a renewed commitment to protecting one of the region’s most essential resources.

Antigua and Barbuda has joined that effort, with Minister responsible for Utilities, the Honourable Melford Nicholas, signing the Water Declaration of Grand Anse 2026 alongside Grenada’s Prime Minister, the Honourable Dickon Mitchell, and other Caribbean ministers responsible for water.

The declaration was signed during the 34th Annual Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA) Conference in Grenada, bringing regional attention to the urgent need for stronger and more sustainable water management systems.

The agreement outlines a collective approach to addressing challenges affecting the region, including water security, climate resilience, wastewater management, digital innovation, infrastructure investment and disaster preparedness.

A major component of the declaration is its endorsement of the Regional Strategic Action Plan (RSAP 2026), which establishes a coordinated framework for improving access to water and sanitation, reducing water losses and securing financing for critical infrastructure projects.

The plan also seeks to strengthen cooperation among Caribbean countries as they confront shared challenges associated with climate change and increasing demands on water resources.

Antigua and Barbuda’s participation signals its continued commitment to regional partnerships aimed at improving water infrastructure and advancing sustainable solutions for communities across the Caribbean.

The declaration reinforces a common regional objective under the theme, “One Caribbean, One Voice for Water Security.”
