Chinese Ambassador Jiang Wei has undertaken to convey Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s proposal for 300 condominium homes at Perry Bay to the relevant authorities in China.

Speaking after Thursday’s handover of Pelican Court, Zhang expressed support for further cooperation on housing but did not announce approval of the request.

“Of course, I will report to the relevant authority back in China of the Prime Minister’s housing proposal,” she said.

The ambassador was responding to a question about whether Beijing would support another development modelled on the 150 homes completed at Pelican Court.

Browne has said he has already written to the Chinese government seeking assistance for the Perry Bay project, which would target housing needs in Rural West.

Jiang placed the request in the context of an ongoing housing partnership.

She described Pelican Court as the first phase and confirmed that another 100 homes were being prepared.

“The Chinese team are now making preparations for that housing programme,” she said.

Those homes are intended for Bolans and Barbuda, where Housing Minister Maria Browne said preliminary site work and technical preparations were advancing.

Jiang said housing was an important aspect of people’s well-being in both countries and expressed hope for further cooperation based on equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit.

Her response leaves the Perry Bay proposal awaiting a decision, while the existing programme moves towards its next phase.

The completed Pelican Court development was financed through an approximately EC$50 million Chinese grant.
