Pelican Court Housing Development Officially Opens Today
The Chinese-funded development provides 150 two-bedroom homes as part of the redevelopment of Booby Alley.
The Pelican Court housing development will officially open today, Thursday, at 9:30 a.m., marking a major milestone in the redevelopment of Booby Alley in the Point community.
The development comprises 150 modern, two-bedroom homes and represents an EC$50 million investment funded through a grant from the People’s Republic of China.
The opening comes eight years after the Government of Antigua and Barbuda announced the Chinese-supported housing programme in October 2018.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne, the parliamentary representative for the area, has championed the project as part of efforts to improve housing conditions for residents.
The redevelopment required families to move into temporary accommodation while preparations and construction proceeded. Disputes, legal challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to delays.
Despite those setbacks, work continued through the tenures of three Chinese ambassadors, with construction teams, engineers and government officials overseeing the development.
For former Booby Alley residents, the project represents a significant change in a neighbourhood where generations of families built their lives and maintained close community ties.
The opening also comes as Antigua and Barbuda prepares to celebrate its 45th anniversary of independence.
Pelican Court forms part of the government’s wider urban renewal plans, which include improving housing opportunities in other communities.
