“Transformational Leadership”: Maria Browne Praises PM’s Pelican Court Vision
Housing Minister says the completed development reflects years of work and a commitment to improving the circumstances of vulnerable residents.
Housing Minister Maria Browne has credited Prime Minister Gaston Browne with providing the vision behind Pelican Court, describing the completed housing development as an example of “transformational leadership.”
Speaking following Thursday’s official handover, the minister said the occasion represented the culmination of extensive work to turn a proposal into modern accommodation for families.
“There is leadership, and then there is transformational leadership,” she said.
“Prime Minister Browne embodies that.”
Asked how pleased she was to witness the handover, Browne said the word did not adequately capture her feelings.
“Pleasing is too much of a small word to describe it,” she said, before describing the experience as overwhelming.
“From the thought to the full execution of these lovely edifices, it has been overwhelming. It has been a lot of work as well.”
The minister said the development reflected the administration’s commitment to caring for people and improving their living conditions.
She also emphasised the importance of climate-resilient housing, linking the new accommodation to the government’s wider housing objectives.
Pelican Court comprises 150 homes financed through an approximately EC$50 million grant from the People’s Republic of China.
Browne said seeing the completed units reinforced the significance of replacing the difficult conditions that previously existed in Booby Alley.
She described the handover as a moment of pride and gratitude, while acknowledging the Chinese government and people for their contribution.
The development has been transferred to the government, with further work required before residents begin occupying their new homes.
