Trump Fires White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia After Just Five Days in Office
A turbulent first week marked by questions over her legal credentials and a controversial debut briefing ends in one of the shortest tenures in White House history.

Just five days after stepping into one of the most powerful communications positions in the United States government, Katie Zacharia has been removed as White House Press Secretary, bringing a dramatic and unusually swift end to her appointment under President Donald Trump.
Zacharia's dismissal on Friday, October 16, came after a turbulent first week marked by intense media scrutiny, questions surrounding her professional qualifications and criticism of her first appearance before the White House press corps.
Her departure was confirmed by a White House official, who indicated that she was transitioning out of the position. Multiple American news organisations, including The New York Times, reported that she had been fired.
Zacharia was offered the position on Friday, October 9, 2026, and began serving the following week, with her five-day tenure running from October 12 to October 16.
She replaced Karoline Leavitt, who departed the administration after announcing plans to devote more time to her family.
However, what was expected to mark the beginning of a new chapter in the Trump administration quickly developed into a controversy that overshadowed her appointment.
On Tuesday, October 13, Zacharia delivered her first White House press briefing, an appearance lasting approximately 14 minutes that attracted widespread criticism.
Questions were subsequently raised about her readiness to handle the demanding role, particularly given the limited preparation time before her introduction to the White House press corps.
Zacharia later acknowledged that she had not been fully prepared for the briefing, explaining that she received briefing materials only hours before facing reporters. She also defended the short appearance, arguing that Trump frequently speaks directly with journalists and serves as his administration's principal spokesperson.
The controversy intensified when attention turned to Zacharia's legal qualifications.
A graduate of Pepperdine University's law school, Zacharia had previously described herself as a lawyer, while Trump publicly introduced her as an attorney.
However, during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday, October 15, she acknowledged that she had not passed the bar examination required to obtain a licence to practise law in the United States.
Zacharia explained that she had been preparing to relocate to China with her husband around the time she took the examination and had not considered the result particularly consequential to her plans at the time.
The admission generated further scrutiny of her professional background and the circumstances surrounding her appointment.
Hours before her removal became public on Friday, Trump appeared to signal uncertainty about whether Zacharia should remain in the position.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, the president defended his newly appointed spokesperson and criticised the treatment she had received from the media.
"I said to her honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider," Trump told reporters.
He suggested that Zacharia had been subjected to unfair criticism and questioned whether remaining in such a high-pressure position was worthwhile.
Trump also indicated that the ultimate decision about her future would be left to Zacharia, although reports of her dismissal emerged shortly afterward.
The abrupt departure has drawn comparisons with Anthony Scaramucci, who served as White House communications director for approximately 11 days during Trump's first administration in 2017.
Zacharia's five-day tenure is even shorter, placing her among the most short-lived senior communications appointees in modern White House history.
Before joining the administration, Zacharia worked as a conservative political commentator and communications adviser, including work associated with Trump Media Group, the company behind the president's Truth Social platform.
Her appointment had been seen as an opportunity to bring another outspoken defender of Trump's political agenda into the administration's senior communications team.
Instead, her brief time in office became dominated by questions about her qualifications, her handling of reporters and the administration's decision to appoint her.
The latest development leaves the White House facing another transition in its communications leadership, just weeks after Leavitt's departure.
As of Friday's initial reports, no permanent successor to Zacharia had been publicly identified.
Her dismissal marks a striking reversal for an appointment that began with presidential backing but ended before she had completed her first full working week in office.
