Residents across Antigua and Barbuda could soon encounter foreign soldiers, military vehicles and heightened security operations in their communities as the country intensifies preparations to host one of the Commonwealth's most significant diplomatic gatherings.

The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) has issued a public advisory warning of an increased military presence throughout the twin-island nation in the coming days, including personnel from overseas who will participate in security preparations ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026.

The summit, scheduled for November 1 to 4, will bring international delegations to Antigua and Barbuda, prompting coordinated security arrangements involving local military personnel and regional and international partners.

In a public notice issued on Friday, October 16, the Defence Force explained that the increased military activity forms part of ongoing exercises and security operations designed to strengthen national security and safeguard visiting dignitaries and the wider population.

“The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) wishes to inform the public that an increased presence of military personnel, including visiting foreign troops, may be observed throughout Antigua and Barbuda in the coming days,” the statement said.

According to the ABDF, residents may notice military vehicles, uniformed personnel and other operational activities in various locations as security preparations continue.

The military has also cautioned that some exercises and operations could result in temporary disruptions or restrictions on movement.

Members of the public are being encouraged to remain calm, exercise patience and comply with instructions issued by authorised security personnel.

The Defence Force stressed that the activities are part of coordinated efforts to ensure the safety of both residents and international delegations attending the high-level meeting.

The anticipated arrival and deployment of foreign military personnel also highlight the international cooperation involved in preparing security arrangements for the event.

While the ABDF confirmed that visiting troops would be among those participating in the preparations, the notice did not identify the countries involved, the number of foreign personnel expected or the specific locations where exercises would be conducted.

The Defence Force reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside regional and international partners to support a safe and secure CHOGM 2026.

With just over two weeks remaining before the summit, the advisory signals an increasingly visible phase of security preparations as Antigua and Barbuda prepares to welcome Commonwealth leaders and their delegations.
