Members of the Antigua and Barbuda St. John’s Taxi Association Inc. (ABSJTA) and volunteers collected 40 large bags of waste during a clean-up and beautification exercise at Big Ffryes Beach, Little Ffryes Beach and surrounding areas on Saturday, October 17.
The initiative formed part of the Association’s preparations for the 2026/2027 cruise season, helping improve popular coastal spaces used by residents and visitors.
Participants filled 40 biodegradable, 48-gallon garbage bags with bottles, cans, paper, plastics and other discarded materials. They also removed leaves and larger debris from the beaches and nearby areas.
The Association said maintaining the country’s beaches supports public recreation, strengthens the visitor experience and helps protect the livelihoods that depend on tourism.
Donations of supplies and refreshments supported the exercise, while a dump truck was provided to collect and dispose of the waste. The ABSJTA thanked its members, volunteers and supporters for their contributions.
The effort also secured a commitment of further assistance from the management of Dennis Beach Bar, which pledged to donate rakes and other essential equipment for future clean-ups following discussions with the Association.
The ABSJTA plans to conduct the exercises twice annually, before the cruise season begins and again at its conclusion, and is encouraging other tourism providers to join coordinated efforts.
“Through sustained collaboration, the tourism sector can contribute to the preservation of the country’s beaches, the enhancement of surrounding areas and the continued appeal of Antigua and Barbuda as a destination,” the Association’s President stated.
