Cedar Grove Primary Receives 20 Chess Sets to Support After-Class Learning
Lady Sandra Williams and Lady Mahasen Hadeed support the school’s Chess Club and explore further practical assistance.
Cedar Grove Primary School’s Chess Club has received 20 chess sets to support its after-class sessions, following a recent visit by Halo Foundation President Lady Sandra Williams and Lady Mahasen Hadeed.
The sets were presented to John Nathan, his teaching partner Kofe James and the school’s Chess Club, providing additional resources for students to practise and develop their skills.
The initiative aims to encourage learning beyond the classroom through activities that promote concentration, careful decision-making and strategic thinking.
Speaking to students during the visit, Lady Williams highlighted the importance of providing opportunities that support children’s academic, mental and social development.
“Education is not limited to books and classrooms,” she said. “It is also about providing young people with activities that develop their minds, build confidence, and encourage strategic thinking. We are proud to support Cedar Grove Primary School and to empower the Chess Club with the tools they need to learn, grow, and excel.”
Lady Hadeed, wife of the late Sir Aziz Hadeed, also spoke about the value of encouraging children to develop their thinking skills.
“When children are encouraged to think critically and creatively, the benefits extend into every part of their lives. We look forward to seeing the Chess Club thrive and to supporting the school in additional ways that make a meaningful difference,” she said.
During the visit, the women met with Headmistress Mrs. Anthony and class teacher Mrs. Gonsalves to discuss other ways the Halo Foundation and its partners could assist the school.
Those discussions focused on small, practical initiatives tailored to the school’s needs and aimed at improving students’ everyday learning experiences.
The school’s leadership welcomed the donation and expressed appreciation for the additional opportunities it will provide for after-class learning and enrichment.
