Kareem Simon, 45, of Greenbay, has been found guilty of murdering 66-year-old Dennis Edwards following a fatal stabbing on Lower All Saints Road in St. John’s more than three years ago.

According to Wadadli Case Files, A jury returned the guilty verdict after rejecting Simon’s claim that he acted in self-defence during the confrontation that claimed the life of Edwards, a resident of Bolans, on August 21, 2023.

During the trial, the court heard testimony from a police constable attached to the Serious Crimes Unit, who revealed that Simon had given investigators a statement alleging that Edwards attacked him first and that he was merely defending himself.

However, video footage presented as evidence showed the events leading up to the physical altercation between the two men.

The recording, which was examined in court with the assistance of the police officer, showed Edwards standing on steps near Courts Furnishings on Lower All Saints Road, while Simon was seated nearby.

An argument involving expletives could be heard before the confrontation escalated into violence.

The footage showed Edwards holding a food container in his left hand and a cellular phone in his right when Simon swung at him, causing him to drop both items.

Although Edwards was seen placing his hand in Simon’s face, the recording showed Simon initiating the physical fight and refusing to back down.

The court also heard that the two men had never spoken to each other before the incident, although Simon indicated that he regularly saw Edwards whenever he visited the capital.

Edwards sustained stab wounds to his upper body during the incident, which resulted in his death.

Following the jury’s guilty verdict, Simon is now awaiting sentencing before Justice John Spencer, who presided over the trial.

Sentencing has been scheduled for November 19.
