LETTER: A Safe Reunion Should Not End Questions About a Child’s Welfare

Dear Editor,

While I am relieved that the young child found wandering alone has been safely reunited with her family, I believe these incidents deserve more attention than a brief announcement that the child is back home.

Where were the parents or guardians when the child was found? How did the child come to be on the streets alone, and what steps are being taken to prevent it from happening again?

These questions are not intended to shame any family. They come from concern for children who may be exposed to traffic, injury or other dangers when left unsupervised.

Members of the public are asked to share appeals and help locate relatives. When those appeals end with only a statement that the child has been reunited with family, some people are left wondering whether the circumstances have been properly examined.

I recognise that the police must protect children’s privacy and cannot disclose every detail. However, reassurance that the relevant authorities are assessing the circumstances and taking appropriate safeguarding measures would help build public confidence.

A child being returned home is a welcome outcome, but it should also be an opportunity to establish what happened and whether the family needs support or further intervention. Where neglect is established, there should be accountability.

I commend everyone who helped ensure this child’s safe return. My hope is that the same urgency shown in finding her family will also be applied to protecting her future well-being.

Yours sincerely,
Delores Harris

Totally agree with that person who informed the public about the safe returned of this child. There must be a serious investigation about, how she was missing from home. This must not be a simple joy or thanks for her safe returned.Any finding about what happened must be on the record for reference to the Public of happen again. Thanks to everyone who helped for her safety returned home.

I agree with you completely. I worry that these children (I've heard of 2 this month alone) found wandering around may need some intervention at home to ensure their safety. Perhaps the parents or caregivers need some assistance with the care of the child. I miss the tight knitted community I had as a child. I couldn't even go to the corner store without 6 different people stopping me to ask if my dad knew I left the house or if my mom sent me store...now we're afraid to speak to our neighbors or their kids due to fear of backlash. I hope there is more going on in the background after reunification that we just aren't being told about and if not then it's not too late to start.
