More than 400 drivers have registered to support transportation for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, according to Transport Committee lead Deon Simmons.

Addressing a public town hall, Simmons clarified that the total includes different categories of drivers, including approximately 40 attached to the national school bus system.

The operation will involve collecting participants from accommodation across Antigua and transporting them to meetings, forums and official events.

Simmons said briefings were being conducted with school bus drivers and taxi operators to explain routes, responsibilities and security requirements.

The committee has also been working with police and airport officials to coordinate arrivals and movements between venues.

With approximately 5,000 overseas participants expected, Simmons described transportation as a complex undertaking requiring detailed planning.

He said the arrangements would also provide opportunities for local transport providers to participate directly in the event.
