Browne Criticises Land Banking as Tourism Plots Remain Undeveloped
Prime Minister urges landowners to turn investment properties into income-generating accommodation.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has criticised the practice of purchasing development land and leaving it unused, saying it is slowing opportunities for greater local participation in tourism.
Browne said land made available for accommodation projects in several areas had attracted buyers, but insufficient construction had followed.
He identified holdings at Pensioners Beach, Shell Beach and other locations while discussing opportunities for locally owned villas and short-term rental properties.
The Prime Minister argued that ownership alone would not produce the economic benefits possible through active development.
He also said people holding substantial bank deposits should consider productive investments rather than allowing their purchasing power to be reduced by inflation.
Browne suggested that investment seminars could help people better understand how to balance cash reserves with assets capable of generating income.
He maintained that government was willing to assist suitable local tourism projects, but said more landowners needed to move from acquisition to construction.
