Antiguans and Barbudans in New York gathered in Harlem on Sunday to celebrate their homeland and reflect on 45 years of nationhood, launching the New York offices’ annual Independence celebrations with a church service filled with prayer, patriotic music and calls for unity.
The service at Salem United Methodist Church brought together members of the diaspora ahead of Antigua and Barbuda’s Independence anniversary on November 1. The country is marking the occasion under the theme, “Renaissance: Rooted in Pride, Bounded by Prosperity for All.”
Prime Minister Gaston Browne, in a message read by Antigua and Barbuda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr Walton Webson, reflected on the country’s development since gaining independence from Britain on November 1, 1981.
Browne highlighted government investments in infrastructure, housing, education and the creative industries, as well as expanded opportunities for citizens and the country’s growing international standing.
“As we look towards the next chapter of our independence journey, my government remains committed to building an Antigua and Barbuda characterized by economic resilience, social inclusion, educational excellence, environmental sustainability and opportunity for all,” the prime minister said.
He encouraged Antiguans and Barbudans at home and abroad to renew their commitment to national development and work towards leaving a stronger country for future generations.
Rev F. Craig Henry of the Little Rock Baptist Church and Shiloh Baptist Church also addressed the congregation, drawing on the Independence theme and challenges facing the nation.
“Who but us can take what they give us and make paradise where people see problems?” he asked.
Describing a renaissance as a rebirth, renewal, revival and restoration, Henry urged those gathered to use what they have to make a difference.
Antiguan and Barbudan clergy also participated in the service, while the Antigua and Barbuda International Chorale and the City South Steel Orchestra led the congregation in patriotic and nation-building songs.
The next event on the Antigua and Barbuda Consulate General’s calendar is its annual Independence Gala, scheduled for Saturday, November 21, at 8 p.m. at the Glen Island Harbour Club.
