Browne Says Deputy Commissioner Will Retain Rank and Pay in Prison Assignment
Prime Minister describes the arrangement as police technical support for the prison service.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the Deputy Commissioner of Police assigned to assist the prison service will retain his substantive rank and associated benefits.
Browne offered the explanation after a caller questioned whether the assignment would amount to a reduction in status.
He said his understanding was that the officer would remain a Deputy Commissioner while providing expertise to the prison.
The Prime Minister described an arrangement involving the police and the Public Service Commission through which that service would be provided.
He said the assignment should not change the officer’s rank, pay or entitlement to benefits at Deputy Commissioner level.
Browne indicated that further advice could be obtained on the arrangement.
His comments focused on the officer’s employment status and the provision of technical support, rather than announcing a new permanent prison appointment.
