Hurst Tips PM Browne for Future National Hero Recognition
Ambassador Lionel Hurst points to economic development and expanded access to university education as reasons he believes Browne could receive the honour.
Ambassador Lionel “Max” Hurst has expressed confidence that Prime Minister Gaston Browne could one day be recognised as a national hero of Antigua and Barbuda.
Speaking during ABS’s coverage of the National Heroes Day wreath-laying ceremony, Hurst pointed to Browne’s leadership since taking office in 2014, citing economic development, investment and the establishment of The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus.
Hurst said he believed Browne’s contribution to addressing economic and fiscal challenges would eventually earn him a place among the country’s most celebrated figures.
His comments were a personal assessment, rather than an announcement of any formal nomination or decision.
The discussion took place as officials gathered at Heroes Park to honour Antigua and Barbuda’s six national heroes, including its only living national hero, Sir Vivian Richards.
Reflecting on their contributions, Hurst highlighted the different ways leadership, education, workers’ rights and sporting achievement have shaped the nation.
He credited Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr. with helping advance the interests of workers and broadening educational opportunities, while recognising Sir George Walter’s role in introducing the Labour Code.
Hurst also recalled Dame Georgiana Ellen “Nellie” Robinson’s efforts to challenge barriers to education and provide opportunities for children excluded by the social prejudices of her time.
Turning to Sir Lester Bird, he highlighted developments in tourism, infrastructure and financial services. He described Sir Vivian Richards’ cricketing achievements as a source of national pride that helped Antigua and Barbuda command international attention.
Hurst argued that a deeper understanding of the country’s history could also bring greater recognition to others whose contributions deserve examination.
The annual ceremony provides an opportunity to reflect on those legacies and the sacrifices that helped shape modern Antigua and Barbuda.
