Antigua and Barbuda Celebrates 45 Years of Independence as Commonwealth Leaders Gather

Antigua and Barbuda celebrates its 45th anniversary of Independence today, November 1, with national observances coinciding with the gathering of leaders for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

King Charles III and Queen Camilla are scheduled to participate in the celebrations, attending a Commonwealth church service at St. John’s Pentecostal Church at 11 a.m., followed by the Independence ceremonial parade at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The royal couple will also meet individuals recognised for their contributions to national life.

The anniversary commemorates November 1, 1981, when Antigua and Barbuda gained Independence from Britain, with Vere Cornwall Bird becoming the country’s first prime minister.

That milestone followed centuries of colonial rule, during which sugar production and the labour of enslaved Africans shaped the islands’ economy and society. Although emancipation came in 1834, the journey to political Independence continued for nearly another century and a half.

This year’s celebrations take place as Antigua and Barbuda hosts CHOGM from November 1 to 4, bringing Commonwealth leaders and delegates together for discussions on partnerships, investment and development.

For Antiguans and Barbudans at home and overseas, the anniversary offers an opportunity to celebrate the nation’s achievements, honour those who helped secure its freedom and reflect on the work still needed to advance prosperity for all.
