Royal Reception Marks Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th Independence Anniversary and Welcomes Commonwealth Delegates
Government House reception marks the nation’s independence milestone and welcomes Commonwealth delegates with calls for partnership, resilience and opportunity.
Antigua and Barbuda brought together national pride and international diplomacy on Saturday evening, hosting a Government House reception to celebrate its 45th anniversary of independence and welcome delegates to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Held on October 31 under the banner “Celebrating Independence, Welcoming the Commonwealth,” the event featured addresses from Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene and Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey.
The gathering came on the eve of the country’s independence anniversary, with speakers reflecting on its journey since November 1, 1981, and the responsibilities accompanying its hosting of CHOGM 2026.
Browne said the convergence of the two occasions presented an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and advance a more prosperous, resilient and inclusive Commonwealth.

He stressed the importance of those relationships for small island developing states confronting climate change, economic vulnerability and global uncertainty.
Botchwey congratulated the people of Antigua and Barbuda and pledged that the summit would deliver action through new partnerships and initiatives focused on investment, resilience and opportunity.
Sir Rodney paid tribute to the citizens whose contributions have sustained the nation, including teachers, farmers, fishers, entrepreneurs and public servants.
Greene recognised more than 600 volunteers supporting the gathering, describing them as the face of the country’s hospitality.
Cultural presentations featured the Antigua Community Players, Arlen Seaton, alumni of the National Youth Choir, steelpan musician and Director of Culture Khan Cordice, and the Antigua Dance Academy.
The formal proceedings concluded with Sir Rodney leading a tribute to Antigua and Barbuda, its people and the enduring friendship of the Commonwealth.
