Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th Independence celebrations extended beyond the country’s shores, as members of the diaspora in Philadelphia gathered to honour their homeland during the association’s fifth annual flag-raising ceremony.

The event, hosted on October 30 by the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Philadelphia Inc., took place at Philadelphia City Hall along John F. Kennedy Boulevard, bringing together members of the Antiguan and Barbudan community, distinguished guests and friends of the country.

A major highlight was the presentation of a proclamation signed by Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, officially declaring October 26 to November 1, 2026, as Antigua and Barbuda Week.

The recognition highlighted the country's heritage and acknowledged the contributions of Antiguans and Barbudans who have established themselves in Philadelphia while maintaining strong ties to their homeland.

Among those attending were Association President Helenmay Bady and Vice President Dawn Greene, alongside executive members Treasurer Hadassa George, Public Relations Officer Barrymore Richards and Charles Ellison.

The ceremony also attracted several distinguished guests, including Kyra Harris of the Office of the City Representative, the Honourable Stanley Straughter, Vice Chair of the Mayor’s Commission on African and Caribbean Immigrant Affairs, and Christopher Chaplin, Jamaica’s Honorary Consul in Philadelphia.

Also present were Charles Ellison, Director of the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Immigration Affairs, and the Honourable Jannie Blackwell, Chair of the Mayor’s Commission on African and Caribbean Immigrant Affairs.

For the association, the annual flag-raising ceremony represented more than a celebration of independence. It was an opportunity for Antiguans and Barbudans living abroad to reaffirm their cultural identity and demonstrate that their connection to home remains strong, regardless of distance.

“Wherever Antiguans and Barbudans gather, the pride in our heritage and the love for our country remain firmly rooted,” the association declared.
