Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre congratulated Antigua and Barbuda as the country celebrated its 45th Anniversary of Independence on Sunday, recognising the milestone and reaffirming the close ties between the two Caribbean nations.

In a message issued on behalf of the Government and people of Saint Lucia, Pierre extended congratulations to Prime Minister Gaston Browne and the people of Antigua and Barbuda as the country marked 45 years of independence, having gained its independence on November 1, 1981.

Pierre noted that this year’s celebrations came at a significant time for Antigua and Barbuda, which was hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026, bringing together leaders from across the Commonwealth to discuss shared priorities.

The summit focused on strengthening partnerships and investment, with issues including climate resilience, trade and sustainable development forming part of the wider discussions.

The Saint Lucian leader also expressed his anticipation of participating in the discussions and meeting with Prime Minister Browne and other Commonwealth leaders during the gathering.

He highlighted the longstanding relationship between Saint Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda through their shared membership in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Pierre reaffirmed his commitment to continued cooperation between the two countries as they pursued opportunities for their people and worked together to address challenges facing the region.

He concluded by extending best wishes to Antiguans and Barbudans at home and abroad as they celebrated the country's 45th year as an independent nation.
