Antigua and Barbuda and Ghana are exploring opportunities to strengthen youth employment, entrepreneurship and skills development following talks between officials from both countries on November 4.

Minister of Social and Urban Transformation, Hon. Rawdon Turner, and Director of Youth Affairs, Dr. Jrucilla Samuel, met with Ghana’s Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, Hon. George Opare Addo, and his delegation.

A central focus was Ghana’s National Apprenticeship Programme, which places young people with experienced tradespeople to gain practical skills in working businesses. The delegation outlined support for accredited trainers, equipment and stipends to help apprentices participate.

Turner expressed interest in how elements of the model could complement Antigua and Barbuda’s technical and vocational programmes, particularly for young people who struggle to remain engaged in classroom-based training.

Samuel highlighted local initiatives, including Entrepreneurship Edge, literacy development, youth leadership and ambassador programmes. She also outlined collaboration with the Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division to introduce entrepreneurial thinking and practical business experiences at an early age.

Discussions covered training and work placements through the Harrison Centre, public-private partnerships, and Ghana’s approaches to business incubation, mentorship, start-up funding and digital skills.

Both sides emphasised the importance of reliable data to identify skills gaps, track participants and measure programme results.

Youth health and well-being also featured, with attention to substance-use prevention and the social and emotional challenges that can affect participation in training and employment.

Officials explored inclusive opportunities for women, persons with disabilities and underserved communities, alongside potential employment in environmental sustainability, the blue economy and cleaner energy.

Turner also acknowledged the contribution of Ghanaian nurses working in Antigua and Barbuda, with discussions touching on possible exchanges of expertise in education.

The meeting concluded with mutual interest in sharing policy documents and best practices, maintaining contact and exploring exchanges involving youth officials and young leaders.
