United Airlines Inaugural Flight to Dominica

Dominica celebrated the inaugural flight of United Airlines on Saturday, non-stop flights from Newark, New Jersey, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to enhance air access.

A special ceremony was held at the Douglas-Charles Airport to welcome the airline.

Tourism Minister Denise Charles-Pemberton who was addressing the ceremony said this new partnership with United Airlines not only makes it easier for travelers to access the country’s landscape but also signifies a celebration and connectivity and shared aspiration.

“Today with the launch of the historic United Airlines flight from New Jersey to Dominica that opportunity grows even bigger for every Dominica,” she said. “This flight is not just about adding another route, it is about transformation, it’s about breaking barriers, opening doors and unlocking new possibilities for tourism, business and personal travel.”

According to her, with this new direct flight from Newark, New Jersey, a major international hub, Dominica is more connected to the world than ever before.

“This means more visitors filling our hotels, eating in our restaurants, exploring our rain forests, diving into our waters and experiencing the warm hospitality that makes Dominica unique,” she stated.

However, Charles- Pemberton said this is not just about tourism, “this is about our people”

Further noting that for the Dominican nationals abroad this flight is the lifeline. “It means that you can fly more easily to see your family and for festivals,” she said.

The minister made it clear that this is only the beginning. “The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) government is not stopping here,” she affirmed. “We are building something even bigger, Dominica’s first international airport,” she indicated.

She continued, “Imagine what that will mean for our country. Direct flights from even more destinations, easier access to trade, more investments and more jobs.”

Meanwhile, the airline’s first flight from New Jersey was also a momentous occasion for Dominican-born pilot Peter Codrington who had the honour of piloting this historic flight.

This is the first time that Codrington has landed an aircraft in Dominica.
