Antigua and Barbuda’s 2023 Queen of Carnival and Jaycees Caribbean Queen is empathizing with the decision taken by Miss USA to relinquish her crown to focus on her mental health.

USA Noelia Voigt surprised the pageant world with her announcement an announcement that comes during Mental Health Awareness Month.

She joins a growing list of performers, celebrities, and athletes who have publicly cited mental health issues as cause for stepping away, most often temporarily, from their careers.

Queen Ischikelle Corbin explained that as a title holder, she understands the gravity of the decision Miss USA made to vacate her post due to her mental health challenges.

She added that as someone dedicated to advocating for mental health, she empathizes deeply with her struggles.

“I know that it takes immense strength to prioritize self-care and I can only commend her for her bravery in making that decision because it sets a very important example for others,” Corbin said.

In a statement Voigt wrote, in part, “Deep down I know that this is just the beginning of a new chapter for me, and I hope that I continue to inspire others to remain steadfast, prioritize your mental health, advocate for yourself and others by using your voice, and never be afraid of what the future holds, even if it feels uncertain.”

In a caption alongside the statement, she wrote, “I realize this may come as a large shock to many. Never compromise your physical and mental well-being. Our health is our wealth. A million thank yous to all of you for your constant and unwavering support. Time to write the next chapter. I hope you’ll stick around to see what’s next.”

Corbin stated that Pageantry can indeed be a challenging environment with title holders bearing significant responsibility and facing various restrictions and balancing those duties with personal life can quickly become overwhelming for anyone.

“While there is still progress to be made in supporting mental health within pageantry it is important for us first to prioritize our wellbeing,” she notes.

She further outlines that while the role comes with both joys and challenges it requires discipline and sometimes sacrifices.

“While nothing worthwhile in life comes easy it’s essential to remember that nothing should ever be at the expense of your mental health and peace of mind”.

In addition to winning two crowns, Corbin is also Miss St Maarten Caribbean Queen.
