Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez Supports HPV Screening Campaign at Clarehall Clinic
Earlier today, Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez, Member of Parliament for St. John’s Rural North and Minister of Tourism, visited the Clarehall Clinic to show his support for the ongoing HPV screening campaign, which runs throughout September.
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible for over 90% of cervical cancer cases, as explained by Nurse Quallis, Zone Officer for the Northern Areas and Villa Polyclinic.
Nurse Quallis emphasized the importance of early detection, stating, “Many women are at risk for cervical cancer, and knowing your status is crucial in reducing that risk.” Minister Fernandez echoed her sentiments, stating, “Tourism is important, yes, but we must first take care of our people. Our people are our priority.”
In recognition of the need for widespread awareness, the Clarehall Clinic has designated September as HPV Screening Outreach Month. Both the Clarehall Clinic and the Villa Polyclinic are offering free HPV screenings, Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 AM to PM at the Villa Polyclinic.
“We understand that cervical cancer can be deadly, and since HPV is the virus responsible for over 90% of these cases, early detection is key to eliminating cervical cancer. We’ve invited you here today to help spread awareness about the importance of getting screened,” Nurse Quallis explained.
Minister Fernandez expressed his personal connection to the cause, sharing, “My family and I have been affected by cervical cancer—both my mother and one of my sisters passed away from this disease, so I can personally relate.”

He concluded by reiterating his commitment to supporting the campaign: “I know you’re not just looking after the people in this area, but those in my constituency as well. I am here to offer my support in any way I can.” Minister Fernandez encourages everyone to take advantage of the free screenings and prioritize their health.
