The International Airport on Barbuda will officially be renamed the Burton-Nibbs International Airport in 28 days.

The facility opened on Thursday with a grand ceremony attended by various dignitaries and key stakeholders.

Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, Lionel Hurst, provided insight into the delay, stating, “At the time the facility was being registered, we had not yet decided on a name. Since that occurred afterwards must now wait this 28 day period,” Hurst said.

He also noted that members of the Burton family, who were present at the opening ceremony, celebrated this significant achievement alongside government officials.

Their presence highlighted the deep historical and personal connections associated with the airport’s new name, reinforcing the importance of honoring local heritage.

Hurst emphasized that the government views this project as one of the most important developments in the recent history of Antigua and Barbuda.

He explained that the construction and opening of the airport represent not just a physical structure but a transformative opportunity for the region.

“This facility opens up a myriad of possibilities for the people of Barbuda,” Hurst stated.

He elaborated that enhanced air travel will facilitate tourism, increase business investments, and improve accessibility for residents.

The airport is expected to play a crucial role in boosting the local economy and providing residents with greater opportunities for employment and community development.
