MP Daryll Matthew
My fellow teachers,
Today, we join the global community in celebrating World Teachers’ Day, a day dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions of teachers to our society. This year’s theme, “Valuing Teachers Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” calls upon us to reflect on the pivotal role our educators play in shaping the minds of future generations and building the foundation for a thriving, informed, and innovative nation.
Our teachers are the backbone of our education system, dedicating their time, energy, and talents to nurture the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators. In the face of challenges—whether adapting to new technologies or navigating unprecedented global circumstances—our teachers have demonstrated resilience, commitment, and unwavering passion for the success of their students.
As Minister for Education, Creative Industries, and Sports, I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every teacher across our nation. Your hard work does not go unnoticed. You inspire curiosity, foster creativity, and instill a sense of purpose in our young people, equipping them with the tools to not only succeed academically but also contribute meaningfully to society.
In recent times, teachers have faced the increasingly difficult challenge of dealing with violence in our schools. This issue not only threatens the safety and well-being of both students and teachers but also disrupts the learning environment and undermines the educational process.
Teachers often find themselves on the front lines, managing conflicts, de-escalating tensions, and addressing the emotional and psychological needs of students affected by violence. Despite these daunting circumstances, our educators continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience and courage.
However, it is imperative that we support them with the necessary resources, training, and interventions to create safe and nurturing school environments. Teachers should not have to carry the burden of school violence alone; it is a collective responsibility that demands action from government, parents, and the wider society.
This World Teachers’ Day, I want to reaffirm your Government’s commitment to supporting our educators. We will continue to provide the resources, professional development, and recognition that they so richly deserve. Our teachers’ growth is directly linked to the growth of our nation, and by empowering them, we ensure the continued progress and prosperity of our future.
To all our teachers, thank you for your dedication, your passion, and your unwavering commitment to excellence. We celebrate you not only today but every day.
Happy World Teachers’ Day 2024!
