Air Quality to Drop to ‘Moderate’ Levels

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has warned that the air quality is to fall to moderate levels.

This is “due to particulate matters 2.5 and 10, associated with the twentieth surge in Saharan Dust for the Country for 2024,” the Met Office said in a bulletin.

The alert, issued last night, covers the period from Wednesday morning until Thursday night.

“The threat of health problems is elevated, for mainly unusually sensitive people, such as asthmatics, and could potentially cause limited health impacts,” the bulletin states.

“The health risk is low; however, be aware of the air quality and take necessary precautions.”

Officials have identified specific groups at risk as “People with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly and children.”

According to the bulletin, “Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants, there may be moderate health concerns for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.”

Experts advise that “Active children and adults, and people with respiratory diseases, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.”
