Liberta Public Cemetery is Officially Closed

26 February 2024 - 20:50

The Liberta public cemetery, a community burial ground located on the island, has recently reached its full capacity, with the last burial taking place just last week.

As a result, public health officials declared the cemetery closed, leaving the community in need of a new location for burials.

Member of Parliament for St. Paul E.P Chet Greene is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and Environment to find a suitable new resting place for the community’s deceased but is facing challenges in securing a location.

Despite the closure of the cemetery, Greene remains committed to ensuring that the final resting place of loved ones is kept in an acceptable standard.

He has promised the community that the individuals responsible for keeping the cemetery clean will continue to do so periodically.

However, if a new location is not identified soon, loved ones will have to be buried outside of the community, which goes against tradition.

Greene is determined to find a new location quickly, recognizing that death can come unexpectedly and that everyone deserves a dignified resting place.

  1. I remembered when the cemetery, in Pigott Village was closed, because it has reached it capacity. That happened over 40-years ago. For today, forty-five years later it’s still closed for burial. Chet Greene, good luck in finding a new burial ground for the area. Once Gaston is alive it will be a no-no for your constituency. Your constituents will be buried in Willikies or Lambert communities cemetery. All Gaston sees is housing projects, No agricultural and No burial grounds!
