Residents are still unable to track sex offenders despite the passing of the Sex Offender Register Bill as it is not yet operational.
According to Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin who spoke to another media entity, “All of the workings, all of the preparatory work has been done.
“Shortly I shall announce when the whole process begins.”
The Sex Offenders Register Bill (2022)) passed in November aims to reduce sexual reoffending by monitoring convicted sex offenders and sharing their information with relevant authorities.
The bill allows individuals to request confirmation from the Commissioner of Police regarding the sex offender status of a named individual.
Public access to this information is also permitted, but any misuse carries severe legal consequences.
Penalties include a fine of $10,000 or imprisonment for three years for obtaining information under false pretences, misusing obtained information, or maliciously disseminating details from the register.
